Myriam Szabo
Instructor and Performer, specializing in Tzigane Dances of the World and Egyptian Oriental Dance

Myriam Szabo's Biography

"I am Myriam Szabo:  Daughter of the sculpturer, Laszlo Szabo;
Dancer; Choreographer; Teacher; and former Producer of Cultural Festivals."

Myriam Szabo has studied Classical and Caracter Dance since she was three years old.  She started her professional career at the age of twelve, with the Ballet Russe Irina Grejbina in Paris.  Besides her knowledge in Classical dance, she practices yoga and Chi Gong, and is a brown belt on karate Shotukan. Additionally, she has acquired knowledge in expressionist contemporary dance, Flamenco, African, and Jewish dance.  Her specialty is in Tzigane dances of the world and Egyptian Oriental Dance.

Myriam has organized and produced several cultural manifestations in Portugal: Rota jazz Porto, Sacred Tibetan Dances in CCB, Arabian Nights, amidst others.  She took part, as actress and dancer, in several movies such as João César Monteiro, Allain Tanner and Margarida Gil.  Myriam also models fashion in Paris, Milan, Munich and New York.

Myriam teaches dance, following a personal method inspired in her many studies of physical techniques, to over 150 students.  She created dance workshops directed to women of all ages for Expo '98, CCB’s animation centre in cooperation with the dancer António Tavares, intensive courses for the Aveiro Dance Company, and many other private entities in Europe with whom she still works.

Myriam performs solo performances and accompanies, as a solo dancer, Moussa El Kenawy and his Luxor musicians on their show by the master Shokry Mohamed; the violin virtuous Tzigane Robbie Lakatos (Deush Gramophone); the Tunisian singer Ghalia Benalli and her orchestra (Network); and Pedro Joia e os Ciganos d’Ouro.

In addition to her dancing, acting, and modeling, Myriam is the cultural assistant of the City Hall, producer of the festival Wild Women’s World, and co-producer of shows with Baal 17.  She started with Iris the monthly EncontrOriente in Lisbon and organized the musical program of the festival Noites da Moura Encantada in Algarve.

Myriam's Response to Nadiyah's Questions

1.  What particular styles of Middle Eastern dance (ME) have you studied?
I have danced professionally as soloist since 13 years old in the Ballet Russe Irina Grjebina. We danced Caracter dances from all counties of x Urss: Georgian, Armenian, Hungarian, Gypsies, Russian, Polish, Kurd...on a base of intensive classical formation.   Then, I studied very intensively Yoga, Meditation, Karate, Chi Gong and later, Flamenco in Andaluzia and Oriental Eance with Shokry Mohamed in Madrid.  I also studied many other syles.  I must mention this diversity, because in my new work, Duende Dance, incorporates all theses techniques....

2.  Who were your teachers for the ME styles?
Irina Grjebina, Shokry Mohamed, Leila Haddad, Kamelia, Eva Chacon, Nur Banu, Annie Nganou, Tarikavalli, etc...

3.  What ME dancers were most inspiring for you?
Shokry Mohamed, Suher Zaki, Amani, Mona Said, Kamelia, Tarikavalli...others whose name I would like to remember.

4.  What differences do you see between ME styles and your preferred dance style?
It is difficult to answer this question, because I am focusing on an emotional and contemporary significance.  My dance incorporates all world dancing traditions instead of specific traditional styles.  The Duende Dance is based on our actual human condition and quest; I use all dance knowledge for this Universal dance path.  Material from our actual life enables us to grow as artists and as humans.  There is more about the Duende Dance in my web site.

5.  What classes do you teach?  If so, where?
I teach intensive workshops all over Europe, mostly Spain, Portugal and Belgium.

6.  Do you regularly perform at particular places?  If so, where?
No regular place.  I dance often in Spain and Portugal.  I also dance with few professional musicians:  Ghalia Benali (Tunisian in Belgium), Roby Lakatos (Hungarian violonist virtuosis), Ciganos de Ouro (Portuguese Gypsies), les Aminches (French fusion folk) ...and with my group, Salamantras.
