On Wednesday, July 7, Alexandra King presented 9/8 Rhythm, also known as Karshilama, a Turkish Cabaret dance. It was a full house and we had just the right amount of room to practice the moves. We warmed up with various mainstream and belly dance warm-up and stretching exercises. Then, we started on the actual instruction. Ms. King provided an explanation of the rhythm and the movements associated with the dance, and immediately went to work. We were sweating bullets within no time. Gratefully, I remembered to bring bottled water for the attendees. |
| Weaving in and out of the workshop attendees, a photographer from The Spokesman Review took pictures. He was careful to stay out of our way and commented afterwards on how much the dance truly was exercise. His work eventually appeared in the newspaper with Amasa Lacy’s picture gracing the page: Wild workouts; Different exercise routines can add excitement to fitness by Heather Lalley (http://www.spokesmanreview.com/tools/story_pf.asp?ID=15270 ). |

The Thursday workshop was a more intimate class with many of the local dancers and instructors already committed to their regularly scheduled classes. The topic was Drum Solo Combinations for Intermediate to Advanced Dancers and it was fast-paced. First, Ms. King covered the different cymbal patterns performed with the different types of rhythms such as Masmoudi and Beledi. Next, she broke down the dance moves and combinations. Then, we practiced the moves at tempo with music. Like the night before, water was essential; it was a great workout! She offered to continue past 9:00 p.m., but we were too exhausted. I really enjoyed the workshops and found Ms. King to be truly professional in her approach to life and to dance. Furthermore, she only talked when necessary during the classtimes, so we were able to focus on the dancing. Also, to reinforce what was learned, she provided handouts, made available the music utilized during the workshops, and had instructional videos on hand for purchase. |
Alexandra King returned in 2005 for an encore presentation for Spokane's First Belly Dance Festival.
